Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, relaxing treatment which, through light touch can facilitate the body’s natural powers of self-healing. It is a non-manipulative treatment that developed from the work of American Osteopath, Dr. William Garner Sutherland in the early 1900s. It has continued to evolve and is now practised separately from Osteopathy as Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy.
The therapist’s hands are used to listen to the intrinsic movements of the bones of the head, the membranes and the cerebrospinal fluid which surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. Palpation of these subtle internal rhythms can facilitate access to Health already in existence in the body and result in release in areas of restriction; effecting structural change, increased physical energy and sense of well-being; and have much wider implications, both emotionally and spiritually.
Initially, a full case history is taken, noting any specific ailments or concerns which may be bothering the client. Lying fully clothed on the treatment table, deep relaxation and sometimes sensations such as heat, pulsations and tingling may be felt. Many people experience reduced stress levels and improvement in the functioning of the immune system as a result of Craniosacral Therapy.
Generally a treatment session will last about fifty-five minutes.
Craniosacral Therapy can improve quality of life in general, as well as helping with specific problems. It is so gentle that it is suitable for all, from babies suffering from colic or birth trauma, to the elderly and those who are fragile or suffering from acute pain. It can also assist with recovery from accidents, falls and strains; and, help with emotional and traumatic conditions.
